Default Rearview mirror button

Stupid question probably...

'98 Blazer
Rearview mirror fell off and I cannot for the life of me get the button (I think that's what you call it - the metal piece that touches the windshield) out so I can glue it back on. There is a clip that holds it in and I can't get it to move so I can take it out. I have tried squeezing it together with my fingers and with pliers and am afraid I am going to break it. I have tried prying it out with a screwdriver. Am I going about this the wrong way or is it just being difficult and I should try harder?

Thanks.

P.S. I am a girl and know nothing about cars, but this should be easy to do.

the button is very hard to get out. It took me a while to get mine off too. I was worried about breaking it too, but eventually it slid out. Try pushing downward on the button while pushing out.

btw: the best remount kit is the glue kit by permatex

Well at least I know I've got the right idea. There is no way it's gonna slide out, though. I'm gonna have to just tape the whole thing up there until it sets.

Thanks.

There should be a slot in the base of the mirror (the piece that slides onto the metal "button"). Stick a small flathead screwdriver in the slot and move it around while you pull on the "button". It should eventually come off.

I finally got it off. I just muscled it...used pliers to pinch the clip together while I stuck a screwdriver under the top and pried it out.

I just had the same problem with my '98. It's pretty easy if you have a flat screwdriver and a pair of pliers. Insert the flathead screwdriver between the top of the mounting bracket on the mirror stalk and the top edge of the button. Squeeze the clip with the priors, and lever the screwdriver to push the button downward toward the clips. Now the button will cover the clip. Twist the screwdriver, which will push the button down further until it pops off. Piece of cake, once you figure out a system that works.

Holy old thread!! General rule of thumb is that if its over 6 months old, best to let it be.
