Default Refilling Coolant Issue?

Alright, I just replaced the freeze plug in my engine block. In order to do that I had to completely drain the coolant. I drained a total of three gallons plus the little that I couldn't quite catch. Well now when I filled it back up, it only took two gallons. Does anyone know why this is happening? Thanks!

Yeah, I even drove it to work. The temp never went over the normal operating temperature. I checked the level before I left work and it didn't need seem to need any.

Try turning your heat on full blast after 5 minutes on idle or a quick trip down to the store.
i think you will need some coolant then around a half a gallon.

Haha, I tried that earlier. Its about a 20 minute drive home from work, so I drove with the windows down and heat blasting. I checked the levels after it cooled down and still no change. My neighbor suggested letting it run in the driveway without the radiator cap. He said, as it gets to operating temp, the radiator will become almost empty, so thats when I should pour the rest of the coolant back in. The problem is, I had to drain the block of coolant and I think there may be air in the system. Sorry for the long post but I really have no idea what to do

well keep your eye on the temp and check your coolant tank daily.
fully drained and having the engine dissasembled capacity for an automatic is 11.7 quarts.
im sure you had at least 3/4 a gallon still in the system.
you can find fluid capacities in your owners manual.

Before I try running it without the radiator cap, would I be able to fill the overflow tank, and then as the air bubbles are pushed out, the resevoir will empty back into the system? Seems like that would be a safer bet then running it without the radiator cap.
