Default Reverse Issues

Hi All - My 96 Jimmy pretty much doesn't go in reverse. I've read some posts in regards to the sun shell. I have all forward gears, though. For a good while it rarely would go at all in reverse. Now it engages at times, but never cold. What do you think?

Thanks - Tom

can you give us a little more info... is it 4X4 etc, If you have all of your forward gears I doubt it is the sun shell, if it was the sun shell you would not have 2nd or 4th... it could be your reverse clutch pack, you sure you have all forward gears, not just 1st and 3rd??

I'm sure that it has all the forward gears. It is a 4x4. It's got 170,000 miles, but I've only had it for the last 40,000 so I don't know any repair history in regards to the transmission. Not sure what other info that would be helpful.

Thanks for the reply - Tom

Tranny fluid level is and was OK. It was pretty dirty, but didn't smell burnt. I drained off around a quart and replaced it with new about a month ago. It does seem to engage a little more frequently since.

Any thoughts for which are most likely and the cost. Probably not anything that I'd tackle.

I would take it to a transmission shop in your area, they are able to do a variety of pressure tests and then they can recommend what needs to be done... you can then go from there
