2001 Blazer LS 4x4

Has anyone replaced the rod bearings in a 4x4 Blazer without pulling the engine? I have access to a 2-post hoist and all the tools needed.

Just wondering if it's possible and roughly how long it may take. My step dad who is more mechanically inclined will be with me. Not sure what the condition of the crank is, but I can't afford to get crank work done or a rebuild Bearings only for now.

 

from what ive read, you can but the front axle will have to be removed. im in a similar situation myself, have a bad knocking noise, sounds like a diesel! i may see about another motor to go through and rebuild, then swap out the junk engine for the rebuilt, hard to say what condition the crank is in, all that knocking, its bound to have some flat spots, probly wouldnt last too long just putting bearings in.

 

i would recommend not driving it then. we just did a 4.3l at the shop and reinstalled it today. it was a boat motor, but still a 4.3l like all the blazers....just a little different. i think my boss said that he was charging around $3500. but thats with removal and reinstall. i would think that if you pulled the motor yourself and reinstalled it yourself, you should save about $1000.

doing the bearings with the motor in the truck is going to be a HUGE PITA! you have to think that you need to re-torque all the rods and the main bearings. thats going to be difficult with the limited amount of space and doing it all on your back, above your head, with oil dripping on you. i dont know for sure, i would have to look it up, but i think that the rods have to be torqued to 50 lbs-ft. but i could be wrong. that would be hard to do with little to no room.
