Default serious passlock help.

[8D]I did a search of forum but nothing came up.Problem. I have a used steering cloumn I want to install it has key.

I need to know if new lock cylinder has to be coded before I install it or can it be coded afterI install it andthe steering column in the truck. Do new lock cylinders come with new keys?

If new lock cylinder does not come with keys I guess I can use my old keys from the old steering column. Can new lock cylinder be rekeyed to work with my old original keys?

If I put new lock cylinder in thereplacement column with my old columnkeys and intall columnwill I be able to reproramme without GM computer. I have reprogramme instructions do not say I need GM computer.

Thanks for anymuch needed help.

So all the experts out there will notice I am confused over what coding is and how it is done. Any body care to explain what coding is and how it is done. I was told the ignition lock cylinders are sold uncoded.

Default RE: serious passlock help.

For the benifit of anybody wanting to know here is what I was told.

The passlock sensor can be switched from old cloumn to replacement column and will not have to do passlock relearn. The lock cylinder does not contain passlock sensor only magnet. The sensor is in the column it is part of the lock cylinder houseing.
My vehicle calls for GPS R61lock cylinder. This lock cylinder can be re coded by an automotive locksmith or dealership technician to fit original keys. If my keys are worn but still working, the locksmith should be able to duplicate and refresh key pattern.

Edit: I will needscanner capable of performing antitheft, if neccessary.

30 minute Procedure
1. ensure battery is fully charged
2. Use a scan tool to clear passlock (TM) DTCs.
3. Turn the igniton switch from the off position to the crank position, and then to run position.
The vehicle will start and then stall.

4. Leave the ignition on until security telltale turns off in 10 minutes.
5. Repeate steps 3-5 for 2 more times(3times total).
6. The passlock (TM) controller will learn the new data on the next start attempt.
7. Use scan tool in order to clear all DTCs.

10 minute method requires use of Techline Terminal and Tech 2 scan tool Passlock reprogramming seed and key.
