Default Service Engine Soon Light Came On

Hello. My 1995 Chevy Blazer has been running pretty good lately. Except for the lousy gas mileage, everything is O.K. Last week my "Service Engine Soon" light came on. The truck still runs fine. My question is "what do I do"? Should I take it to a mechanic, to Meineke, or try to use the paper clip method? I can't afford to spend $400-$500 right now. I spent $400.00 a couple of months back getting new brakes. Thanks for all your help.

Your 95 could have any one of three computer control systems and two different injection systems. Two of the computer control systems require a scan tool to retrieve the DTC's. One of those two systems requires special software capabilities in the scan tool. In the image below, does the connector under the driver side of the dash look like the top or bottom connector?

I'll check it on Sunday and then post the answer. I went to Autozone and they don't lend out the scanner anymore. I'll call a few places and see what they say. Thank you for your replies.

Hello. I checked the connector and it is the OBDII/EOBD type connector. The bottom one of the 2 pictured.

Do not use the paper clip method. The PCM could be permanantly damaged. Most of the auto parts stores will retrieve the DTC's, (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) for you at no charge. Write them down and post them in the order they are retrieved.

O.K. Thanks for the information. I'll go Tuesday and then come back and post the codes.

Just for clarity, the auto parts stores won't loan out the scan tool...they'll read the DTC's for you in the parking lot with the scan tool.

I found out that in California, auto stores are not allowed to scan your car for codes anymore. I took mine to Meineke because they told me that they would scan it for free. Blah, blah, blah, they want to charge me $48.00 to scan it. So now I'm back to looking for a mechanic who will scan my truck for free. I will post again after the results.
