setting up distributer timing.
i acidently turned the motor while i had the distributer out. now i need to put it back in is tdc od number one the grove on the balancer?
#2
Covered in the Tech Article (DIY) section under EDI Engine Timing.

i follow the directions but the last 1/4 inch the dist wont go down is this the oil pump driveshaft needing to be turned? also wats the best way to ensure u on the comp stroke with the valve covers on.

With the plugs out and your finger over the plug hole, turn the motor over either with a wrench on the crank nut or with the starter until your finger gets blown off of the plug hole. Note the notch on the balancer and rotate the motor to align the notch with the pointer on the timing cover.

i think this is what u ment.. i set notchs one to lower pointer and one to timing pointer. removed number 1 plug started to rotate instintly felt air pushing out. continued rotating till marks were back in postion. then droped the distributer in.. the pointed was a few degress off the number six.. attempted to start and it would back fire when using brake clean.. checked fuel pressure it was ok. no communications at the dlc port. when u **** the key off there was a rattling noise sounding like it was comming from the intake.

If you rotated until the lines were lined up again, it's possible your timing is 180 degrees off. In a 4 stroke, the piston reaches to top of the cylinder twice. You'll be able to tell the air difference if you have a buddy clicking over the starter for you. The piston needs to be at TDC of the compression stroke, not the exhaust stroke.
The rotor should be pointing (spinning clockwise) just past the screw hole at the front right of the distributor before installing. There are dots at the base of the distributor that should be in line. Once the distributor is all the way in, the rotor will point at the little "6" pointer. The rotors movement will be about 42 degrees.

EDIT: Added 2 pictures of the distributor marks, (1) in first picture is for the 4.3, (2) is for the V8. Second picture is where it should end up once installed.

Midnight, that part is covered in the EDI engine timing thread as well. Looking back at this thread, it also discusses the alignment of the marks on the balancer. Given that the marks are 90* apart, you really do not have to have your finger over the spark plug hole. You just line those two marks up with the appropriate references and it is TDC #1.

ive been messing with this timing forever. the fuel pump is not holding at about 55 while cranking but still bleeds down. like a bad check in the fuel pump but it still should start right? also tried it with a fuel system cleaner at 60 psi filled with gas and wouldnt start.. everytime i put the distributer in im about 5 degrees ahead of the 6 or im like 7 degress behind it... i went with the 5 because ti seemed closer but still not starting.. i also tried with a diffrent distributer and was getting the same results... im thinking mabee i need to back it up a tooth i belive witch would put it at about 7 degrees behind the six. or my timings 180 off.

midnight was right it was 180 off once i roated it again the dist poped right in dead on. thanks..
