Default Size and/or GM part number of window reg rivets?

Hello all, first post here.

Just the other day my 2002 ZR2 had its first real problem in that the electric window on the driver's side stopped working.

In checking it out, it has a bad motor so I am getting a whole new regulator with motor assembly as this is the way to replace this using GM PN: 93386009

So in prep for this in taking it apart, I saw where it had 4 rivets holding on the regulator mechanism and removed those to remove the regulator.

Now I would like to use new rivets to reassemble it but am was not sure of what size or type they were. So I did some research and as best as I can tell, they are a 1/4" with a GM part number of 10157547, which mostly I derived from this: GM Window Regulator Rivets 1/4 Diameter 10157547

I have ordered a 1/4 HD gun for this too.

So I was just wondering if anyone could confirm any or all of this for me as I really would like to be sure I am using the right ones.

Btw I know a lot of people usually use bolts for this but in measuring the holes I noticed that the holds in the door are almost a 5/16" and the ones in the reg are almost 1/4"

Point being, the way this rivet installs which I can tell from the removed ones is that it creates a angle taper at its joint spot as the inner steel pin is shaped that way at this point, and with these holes being different, I can tell what this means is that this kind of a rivet will center everything just the way is was from the factory, where a 1/4' bolt will not and so will also keep it there better.

Anyway, hope someone can help me out with these numbers as I just was hoping someone would know this stuff here as I would like to be sure I am getting the right parts

Thanks for any help

hi i have worked at gm dealerships for around 3 decades and all the techs used to replace them with 1/4 inch machine screws washers and locktite.
you can get the rivets at any GM dealership , But finding the rivet gun to install them is going to be a problem

Hello Flatearthman and thanks for the reply

Yeah I hope it is going to work but I ordered this gun as at least it say's its for 1/4 rivets and is listed as heavy duty and looks like a compound type: http://www.astrotools.com/default.aspx?toolsnum=1426& which I found and purchased here: Amazon.com: Astro Pneumatic 1426 1/4-Inch Heavy-Duty Hand Riveter: Home Improvement

I've also seen that there is this gun: Alcoa: AFS: Industrial: Products which I think is quite popular for these as well but it typically runs in the $100.00+ range.

Hopefully the one I got will do the rivets and is the right price for a part time user.

Btw I think this size and type of Rivets are also used for things like the fender flairs for my Zr2 model and possibly a few other things, which is why I figured it might be worth getting it too.

So I guess I'll go ahead and order the rivets I numbered and see what they are like.

Certainly I can compare them to what I took out and as well try them and then if they don't seem like they are holding, I can always take them out and replace them with screws & nuts as you stated Flatearthman.

But as well, it anyone has anymore info or comments about any of this, please feel free to chime in.

Thanks again Flatearthman

Thought I would make a follow up post to this that this work, worked out very well.

Those rivets I numbered in the OP while not exact replacements to what I took out as they seem to be a bit longer, still, worked out very well for this application.

As far as their dia. size, they seem to be the same and although being a little longer, they did not hit.

About the only thing that was a bit of a thing to notice was more with the regulator in that is seemed to have quite a bit of a smaller coil spring.

I don't know if it had the same pressure application abilities and I did go to look to change it with mine, but GM seems to have created this knurl in the middle of the new one that would not let me take it out.

So as well as I was thinking this spring may have been spec'ed to a new motor maybe, I decided to leave it.

So the window up and down seemed to work just fine, I do see that it is a bit slower then the passenger.

Whether this is just from use or that spring I can say but since it works, I'm not worrying about it.

Anyway, just wanted to post in case anyone is looking to do the same that the GM parts, and that rivet gun btw, all worked out great.

Thanks

try spraying some silcone lube into the vertical run channels front and back then put the window up and down a few times that should make it go smoother, and of course wipe the residue of the window when you are done.

I ordered my new window motor from rockauto.com and they came with 3 new machine screws with washers. Was very easy fix but was a B!@#$ getting out those old rivets using my dremill tool. You should not need to get rivets! What if you have to replace the motor again?
