Default Speed-o problem

2001 Trailblazer. Driving down the road in a 35 MPH speed zone........but the speedometer is saying 80 MPH!! I take it it's the speed sensor in the side of the transmission? If that's it, can I remove it and clean it? Will that help or is a replacement neceassary. Thanks.
