"What functions depend directly on the VSS signal, Alex..."
What unusual happened just before? Either VSS sensor or wire to

I know my 1st gen has a fuse for the cluster. It blew and only my speedometer and tac wasn't working. everything else was. On mine its a 20 amp fuse,I dont remember what it was labeled as. Check all you're fuses before digging into it.

on a 98 if it has a digital dash it will be fuse #3 on the driver side fuse panel inside the door jam. For what its worth pull the fuse and see if your gauges work. I know it sounds strange but mine did the same thing and I just pulled that fuse and all my gauges worked again. At the sacrifice of cruise control of course.
