Default Squeaking Belt

Hey,

I was wondering what to do about this squeaky belt I have. It squeaks and squeaks lol. I know WD-40 is a no no and belt dressing doesn't really work. I heard someone I here using baby powder maybe? Maybe it was a diy guide for belt squeak fixing. Does anyone else use something different or is baby powder really the way to go?

Hey! March down to your local parts house with $30 and buy a new belt, after you pull the old one off( about 1 minute ) turn all pulleys by hand to check for resistance! Then check the tensioner, should be tough to push by hand back into normal operating position;if it appears too loose, grab another $40 and get one of those too! R&R of both these parts takes only about 30-45 Minutes! Good luck

My truck had the same problem, The belt tensioner was the culprit. They're like $30, start your truck up and watch the tensioner while the truck is at idle, then rev it a few times, if the tensioner jumps around it's probably time. What happens is the spring in there gets weaker and when more tourque is applied it loosens up and the belt squeals....sometimes it will get bad enough and squeak....squeak....squeak at idle.

A lot of guys (including me) swear by the goodyear gatorback belts. That fixed my squeaky problem. Got mine off of amazon because I couldn't find it locally. Around $30 like previously stated.

Do a search, guys!

https://blazerforum.com/forum/lounge...ne+belt+squeak

And a gatorback MIGHT help but squeak is NOT normal in a serpentine belt, no matter how cheap it is.
Read that link

Now... is it squeak or squeal.. two different things, and a bad tensioner spring will cause squeal.. but so will a bad alternator.

Keep in mind that one should NEVER use a solvent that is petroleum based on a RUBBER belt-this will only accelerate wear and lead to ultimate destruction of the belt;usually in a short period of time. And one gets a nice rubber/solvent shower all over your motor to boot! There goes your clean engine compartment! Just buy the belt & possibly the tensioner and be done with it! Really!

My belt squeaked for a very long time (Years). It did not matter that I replaced the tensioner or belts the squeak would not go away. I finally tried the goodyear gatorback and no more squeaks. That is all I will use on my 89 GMC S-15 Jimmy. I am the original owner and I was really frustrated and was determined to find the source/reason for the squeaks, and everthing that could have been the culpret was replaced or eliminated as the source. Belt dressing would quiet the noise for a short term only.

Humor me. Let's do a real live experiment...

While the belt's in a mood to squeak, gather a bar of soap, touch it lightly to the SIDES of the belt as it turns, not the grooves or flats, the sides.. and see if that makes a difference.

Hey pettyfog! I used to do that years ago and soap works! Temporarily however-more effective in cold weather (obviosly) Chalk will work as well... Have used both top cog and standard belts & have never experienced any squealing in any application that I have had! I still suspect an accessory drag though!
