Default Starter clicks, but when removed from housing it turns???

I started having problems with my starter when I damn near drowned the blazer in water. Everything started working fine after some time but now the starter just clicks when I turn the ignition. I took it out of the housing by undoing those 2 long bolts but didnt disconnect the wires. When I briefly started it, the starter now turns, (albeit alot faster obviously) So is the starter motor bad, or the solenoid, or friggin both.
Btw, brand new battery, cleaned the terminals already.
Any help will be appreciated.

Could be the fusible link is bad and not supplying enough current to properly turn over the motor, but enough to spin over the starter when disconnected from the engine.

Sounds to me like water possibly got into the starter and the bushing has rusted / corroded. I have had a few cars with intermittent starters that need a good tap while someone tries the ignition. If the starter happens to land in this bad zone it will need another tap to free it up. Taking out the starter may have moved bushing allowing it to rotate now. I believe the bushings can be replaced but you may have to invest in a new starter. Thats my two cents. G.L.

Makes alot of sense. The starter was definately immersed in water for a good couple hours, and didnt start turning after two drying for two days. Am still in the process of taking it out . Will try and look at those bushes, thanks.

The fusible link is the main positive cable from the battery to the starter. Hook a volt meter up to the positive post on the starter and see what your voltage is when the starter is not engaged and then monitor it when you engage the starter. If it drops further than the battery does under the same scenario, then you either have a corrosion problem or a fusible link problem.
