I have a 97 chevy blazer md size 4.6 ltr i was haing power problems to ingnition switch it would turn over and radio would come on but dash light and fuel pump would not.....i found if i would lift column i would get power to everything well when i did it this last time it popped and cracked and started smoking under hood on driver side just behind master cylinder .......what could be the problem here!!!!!!

 

Sounds like you have some wiring that is grounding out. Sad to say that the only way you will know is to tear into it.
