Default Sunroof by-passing closed position

Hello Everyone,

Just purchased a 03 ZR2 Blazer. I noticed the sunroof is not stopping in the closed position. I searched through the owners manual and could not find one reference to sunroof operation but managed to find some info online. If I push and release the toggle switch to the rear, the roof opens and stops at the halfway position. Will not open all the way. If I push and hold the toggle in the forward position the sunroof will open to the vent position. If I push the toggle to the rear to close the sunroof, the roof will again open to the halfway position. I obviously have an issue going on. The sunroof is not stopping in the closed position at all or opening all the way. Motor sounds good, no clicking and/or binding. Sunroof slides w/out issue. Tracks look fine and nothing appears to be broken. In searching the net, I have found posts concerning re-calibration of the sunroof module and drive motor timing. I don't know how correct this info is. Also found a reference to a GM# 12333707 sunroof module as being faulty. Can these modules be tested at all?? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all for your time.

Regards,
Rob

Hi,

No, I never did. I tried several solutions posted on various forums with no success. I did swap out the sunroof control module with a new one and that made no difference at all. That was the easiest fix to try first. I finally took it to my local Chevy dealer. I was told the entire sunroof assembly had to be replaced. $1200.00 for the repair, parts, labor/install etc. The dealer advised that there are integrated stop sensors in the sunroof guide rails that were faulty. These faulty sensors were sending the wrong signals to the sunroof motor which was causing the sunroof to stop/not stop in the correct positions. The only way to replace the sensors was to replace the entire unit. The senors themselves are embedded in the rails. Honestly, I never heard about these embedded sensors before. Neither did anyone else I spoke with for that matter.

I ended up going to my local Pull-a-Part and getting a used assembly from a donor Blazer. They charged me $45 dollars for the entire unit. Motor and glass included. Put the extra glass and motor on the shelf. The only bad part of the deal was removing/replacing two sunroof assemblies. But, that also gave me a chance to re-route the rear drain lines which just about everyone I spoke with suggested I do. Pull-a-Part also issues a warranty as well. This is due to them not allowing you to bring a battery into the yard to test your parts. I tested the assembly once I got home before I began the install. I also replaced the glass weatherstrip/seal while everything was apart. Purchased a new seal from this website : The Sunroof Doctor - Your source for replacement sunroof & t-top parts!

Sunroof Doc came highly recommended from just about everyone on the forums. He had a great price for a new seal. Cheapest I found. I have had no issues with the replacement assembly. Works as it should.

Hope that helps. If you have any questions or need part numbers and or diagrams for the assembly, let me know.

Regards,
Rob
