TailLight/BrakeLight Question

TailLight/BrakeLight Question
2002 4DR
Buddy was driving behind me the other day, said your brake lights out drivers side. Got home, had him step on the brake, started working. So it has been coming and going Works one day not the next. Signal, Hazards, and Night running lights work fine.
So I pulled the fixture out today, tested it, 3 fixtures. Bottom is reverse light, and top two light up when on the brakes. They were working at the time, headed into work and they are not working again.
My question, I see power and ground to each fixture/socket, do these combine/splice into one main connector somewhere. I just do not understand how both fixtures/lights go out at the same time. I would think if it were a power or ground one would work, not have them both go out intermittenly. If it were the brake switch or fuse, I would imagine both lights out (drivers and passenger) which is not the case. Also the 3rd light working fine all the time as well!
Does anyone have any insight or a diagram of that wiring system I could look at.

sounds like a bad ground somewhere on that side
id check the ground for that housing
id check the ground for that housing

u could have dirty light sockets too. clean the contacts in the socket and on ur light along with checking ur ground.

Thanks guys, I found a diagram after quite a few searches.

Just weird, that I get power from those sockets, just not brake lights..
Time to dig into her tomorrow.

I had that problem and it was the multi function switch, Just my 2 cents.
When it stops working wiggle the stick on the multi function switch and see if it starts working, that's how I found the problem.

Thats a GREAT diagram.. beats the crap out of the ones from alldata.
Save that one to your diagrams folder. Looks like it's mainly for truck but that's close enough.
gojorg is probably right. But in that case, then the main problem is probably in the main contact block of the turn signal switch. There's no connection/current path for individual brake light when in normal position.
IOW if you jiggle the turn sig stalk it would probably come on.

gojorg,
Thank you, sure enough that is exactly what is happening, glad I checked this today. As I had already checked ground, socket, bulbs, etc..
Going to start on it tomorrow, would it be better to just replace the switch, or attempt to clean it and use some di-electrical?

Wis..refer to the diagram Look on the right side: -top sw and bottom 2.
it's probable that the turn switch contact molded housing is cracked. The reason jiggling hazard sw works is that it moves all the contacts on that copper buss. Cleaning and regreasing might help for a while but it will likely happen again.
Rockauto has AC Delco pretty cheap. The full option one: $125
