Default Temp Gauge & Thermostat

I have a 2001 Blazer. The temp gauge goes all over the place. It appears to get hot really fast, within 10 or 15 minutes the gauge buries into 260 deg. The check gauges light goes on and then after a few minutes it settles back down to around 230 deg. All the while I have no heat until I've driven around for about 20 minutes to a half an hour. I'm guessing a bad thermostat. The only thing is when the gauge is buried past 260 deg, there is no sign of overheating or anything. Does anyone have any ideas? Oh yeah, and now the check engine light is on and it doesn't go off...

Thanks,
Gary

take it to zone or any auto parts store that will fun your codes for free, that will help you narrow it down.
Sounds like a thermostat but could be many different things: heater core, thermostat, water pump, air in rad., or radiator to mention a few. And it is never a good idea to continue to drive if it is that hot, I dont care if it doesnt act like its overheating or not.

I've got a little (not too expensive) infrared thermometer that I use for diagnosing cooling system problems. They work great especially when you don't know if it is hot enough to burn you.

I use it to diagnose fuel problems in my dad's tractors as well.
