Default thermostat/service engine soon

so... here's the story.

heat hasn't been working well for a few weeks, but i thought nothing of it.

driving home from work this morning, heat wasn't working. i noticed that the engine temp got up pretty high (250), then the 'check gauges' light came on. then the 'service engine soon' light came on.

at this point, i got a blast of hot air through the heating system, the engine temp went back down to normal, and the 'check gauges' light went off, but the 'service engine soon' light stayed on.

am i right to think that this means i need to replace my thermostat?

if so, is this an easy enough procedure to do on my own, or should i take it to a mechanic?

[sm=welcomesign.gif]to the Forum. What are you driving and have you had the engine codes read since the SES light came on?
