Exclamation "thunk" in 4wd?

I hope this is the right place.

Now, to business:

I have a 1995 4door 4x4 LS Blazer(s-10 kind). It has a push button transfer switch; with 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO.

When I drive in 2HI its perfect. Now, when I go to drive in 4HI it does fine. That is, until I get to around 40 - 45 mph. When I get there it begins to "thunk".

This "thunk" is relatively loud and you can feel it jerk forward slightly. Why is it doing this? Can it be fixed easily?

P.S.
I have not gone higher than 40 -45 because of this. I also can not use 4LO, because I accidently hit the button one day while working and broke the button itself. I still have the ability to use 4LO, I just need to little button piece.

Thanks a bunch.

Jeremiah

Is it only one thunk or multiple?

multiple, I'd say every 15 - 20 seconds or so.
