Timing belt or chain
What does my 2005 Chevy Blazer 4.3 vortec have, a timing chain or timing belt...and does it need to be changed or serviced at a certain amount of klm's.The truck has 90,000 klm's.
You should find the 'default thread subscription mode' in your user cp accessible by clicking on the link on the left side of the top menu bar. Then clicking 'edit options'. It will be part way down the screen.
along the same idea of the original post, how would you be able to tell if the timing chain needed to be replaced (outside the obvious pulling the cover off and measuring the slack) back in the day, if you had a timing light hooked up and the mark didnt stay steady (danced around eratiacally) it was a sign that the chain was loose and needed to be changed. with all of todays sensors and computer compensating controls, would the same thing happen? i know that if the chain goes, the motor will more than likely be ruined. and even though its at nearly 180,000 miles it runs good, has 180 psi compression on all 6, uses only a qt oil in 4,000 miles. (and some of that is leakage from the remote filter) will get 22 highway mpg. the only bug it really has is on the 1-2 shift first thing when its cold, it will stumble and nearly fall on its face, the rest of the shifts are fine, and once its warmed up, it will grab 2nd and go with no issue. could the chain have enough streach that timing is off enough to cause a cold-condition stumble on the 1-2 shift? overall this vehicle has really impressed me, its got its bugs, but for pushing 200K, its done really well.
CLICK HERE for the first link that popped up using a google search for "how to tell if a timing chain is stretched".

Timing chains don't intermittantly fial and pop back to the correct position. Once the skip, it stays out of timing. Once out of timing, you;ll know at any speed.
