I always take the spark plug out in cylinder number 1 and push a ball of paper towel big enough to fit kinda snug just in the spark plug hole and slowly turn the engine over by hand, and when the number 1 cylinder reaches top dead center compression stroke it will literally pop and shoot the paper towel ball right out!! then you know you are really close to top dead center and you can continue through the correct procedure using the line up marks on the dampener and on the distributor, and also MAKE SURE YOU DON'T HAVE WIRES FOR CYLINDER NUMBER 1 AND CYLINDER NUMBER 3 BACKWARDS AT THE DISTIBUTOR, causing the rough running problem also cause alot of people make this mistake.

Put it at top dead center and drop the distributor in so it lines up with the number six on the distributor housing (It is a little stamped mark that is on the housing). I dont mean any disrespect but where is number 1 cylinder to you,it should be LH front while sitting in vehicle

The timing wire is on the older engines only and has nothing to do with the engines equiped with the EDI distributor. On these ignition systems, you must find TDC #1, then align both of the timing marks on the balancer as shown in the DIY article linked to above.

The crank should be only slightly advanced beyond TDC #1. If you are rotating the crank over 15 degrees, that is too far and the balancer may have somehow slipped. Another member recently ran into this. He replaced the balancer and the motor timed perfectly the first time after.
