Default Timing Questions

Hey all. I recently changed the Lower intake manifold gaskets on my 2003 GMC Jimmy, and naturally, T threw off the timing in doing so. After reading the article on edi timing and the various threads on the subject, I still have a couple questions.
When both marks are aligned on the balancer, does this mean that you are on the compression stroke, or do you have to use another technique to determine the stroke AND align both marks?
The scantool I use doesnt specifically list CMP retard, is there another term used for the data point, or do I need to find another scantool?

Re-read the posts in the search feature here & elsewhere, then re-check your work! Yes the #1 cyl is on its commpression stroke but is at TDC with valves closed, waiting for the fire in the hole!
