Default Top of Fuel Tank - Broke Cap Pieces - Are they important?

Trying to fix fuel pump - dropped tank but broke two small (plastic cap pieces?) on both top ends of tank. The caps screw in and aren't broken but the plastic inlet piece is - question is - are they important? Can I just plug them up? Just a work vehicle around my property, never on the road etc but don't wont to blow myself up!! Thanks.
