Default torque converter not all the way in?

hey~
I replaced transmission and now the engine wont idle?
Engine still was running fine after replacing transmission and checking fluid level it was not even on dipstick yet. I add a couple more quarts, but now the engine won't idle. I tried driving down the street and it doesn't want to shift, until I put it in 1st and it shifts.
Transmission guy thinks the TC is not all the way into the tranny.
If tranny is snug to engine, can the TC still not be all the way in?
appreciate any help,..
Dave

If it wasn't seated fully, it should have been apparent when mounting the transmission to the engine. If everything was drawn up tight without a fully seated TC, you probably damaged the pump and possibly cracked your bell housing. The last thing to engage is the pump drive dogs.

The image below is of a damaged pump (note the crack at about the 2 o'clock position):

If it was running properly initially, then I would suspect something else is going on with the engine.

actually, the last thing I did before the engine was revving up was add fluid.
It was running fine but not engaging gears right when I got it running and went to check fluid, and nothing on dipstick so I turned it off and added a couple quarts. When I started it again, it wouldn't idle. Maybe overfilled?
I just pulled the starter and remove flexplate bolts. Popped the access cover, and the TC spun fine, it did go back 1/4 in or so but it didn't engage anything and it will pull forward again when bolting up.
Any idea why it didn't want to shift until I put it in low gear?

What year we working on? You can leave the converter bolts out and push the converter back and start the engine and see if the engine will run correctly. If it does you need to look at trans. If the engine still won't run right look for some loose or broken connectors on engine wiring. MAF will give you shift problems.
