Default trans push buttons

In 2hi the light on the push button stays on, when i change to 4hi or 4lo their lights will just flash on and off. I tried 4auto on a gravel road, it flashed on/off for about 30 seconds then switched itself back to 2hi. Is this normal or do i have a problem, i assumed the light would stay solid for the gear i'm in, like it does in 2hi?

Your transmission is not shifting into the other gears. You have a problem. The difficult part of this is that the Auto4wd transfer case cannot be scanned by your typical code scanner or jumping any pins. It must be scanned by a high feature scan tool with chassis code capability (dealer Tech2 or equivalent).

You could start by cleaning the connections at the TCCM (transfer case control module) which is located behind the passenger side kick panel. The electrical connections at the TCCM are not sealed and often can corrode causing intermittent operation. You could also try taking apart the switch and cleaning the contacts inside for the buttons, etc.

Sometimes, this is a problem with the transfer case encoder motor position sensor. Crappy part is that the position sensor is not independently serviceable, but is part of the encoder motor itself. The only way to fix it is to replace the encoder motor which is expensive and should only be replaced once the proper diagnosis has determined that it is at fault.
