I have 2000 4 door 4WD blazer with 4 button 4WD. I pulled my front driveshaft the other day to replace the u-joint. I noticed that it did not spin freely and I had to use a long screw driver to get it to turn. Once I got it out I could see that the front differential turned just fine. According to the button on the dash it is in 2WD. So my question is, if it is in 2WD should the front output on the transfer case spin freely or is it still in 4WD somehow. If it is, how do I get it in to 2WD for now so that I can at least drive it. Thanks for any input.

 

The 4-button transfer case does not spin freely. This is normal for a NP236.

 

Thanks for the info! Does it bother anything to drive around with the front drive shaft off? I haven't actually reinstalled it yet because I don't have a grease gun handy to grease the front U-Joint.

 

I really don't know for certain, but I don't see how it would hurt anything. Yours doesn't have a way to leak oil out the the TC when driveshaft is not installed does it?

 

I don't think so.

 

Driving with front driveshaft removed will not hurt anything.
