need help with transfer csae
Hello there , I was hoping to maybe get some help about my 1999 Blazer. I was going down the road the other day about 55 M.p.H. and both front tires locked up leaving 2 skid marks about 25' long. When this happened it broke the upper mount on transfer case and the transfer case dropped down about 4-5" . I took the front drive shaft loose and was able to drive it home. What would cause this to happen?? Can I unhook the front axle's and still be able to drive the vehicle?? Any help would be much appreciated.
The transfer case does not have an "upper mount", are you possibly referring to the front differential? Does the 4WD switch on the dash have 3 buttons or 4? With the driveshaft disconnected from the front differential, were you able to rotate the shaft by hand?
Do not drive the vehicle with the front half shafts removed. The outer end holds the hub/bearing together.

Thanks for the answering back, I did check it again and I guess it was the differential that is broke. The dash has 3 buttons. And yes I was able to turn the drive shaft by hand with it disconnected. Do you think it needs a new differential then?
If you could turn the driveshaft freely when it was disconnected, (transfer case end turned freely) it sure sounds like the differential has/had an issue, (ring & pinion or side gears took a dump). Most likely in need of a new, used, or rebuilt one, and at the very least, repair the one you have, if it's practical & possible.
ok Thanks to the help of Captain Hook I think I am going to try and replace or repair the front differential with another used one if this is the best way to go, but I could really use some help about getting it out, never changed one on a 99 blazer before, is there a website I could go to and get a diagram for reference. I found a used front differential on ebay for $150.00 does that sound like a good price? Once again any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks and have a great day!
