First off, thanks again for everyones good ideas!

I bought an airtex fuel pump from autozone, part number:E3925M. says its for four door. I did not compare the old pump and new pump side by side before the reinstall, however I did place the pump inside the tank without the O-ring and it seemed to sit fine leaving just a little space for the ring... its weird... Now after I lubed the ring the pump DID seem to go on easily...just wondering now, if because I was excited about it fitting, did I just not notice the o-ring slip off during installation. when I drop the tank next time, I plan on doing these 3 things:

1. compare the entire assembly side by side with old assembly.
2. replace the hoses connecting the filler neck to tank.
3. use silicone lube before reinstalling O-ring.

I will let you all know how it goes after the next attempt. Probably will not be until next weekend before I get time, but hopefully sooner.

P.S. I agree Spitty, this job IS getting out of control!
