Would this require replacing the coil, or is there a way to prevent it from overheating? If the current coil is overheating, what assurance do I have a new one would not overheat as well?

You can have the coil tested (have it done repeatedly to get it hot) for faults. I would recommend you find a store that can do this prior to putting a new on one.
As far as the coil "overheating", that probably is an inaccurate term. I used it to combine the effects of heat on the ICM & the coil. The coil shouldn't ever overheat under even extreme operating conditions, but a fault could exist that only occurs once the coil reaches normal operating temperature (hence the repeated testing to heat it up). The ICM is mounted on a heat sink and if the thermal paste (dielectric grease or better) isn't doing its job, it could physically overheat.

What about the maf??? He said he has been having alot o problems in the high altitudes, and when he is starting up a hill!? On my blazer i had an issue once where anytime went to go up any hill(and i live in a hilly place) the truck would stumble and fall dead on its face. Checked fp and that was good, checked plugs wires even corrosion nothin. But for the hell of it i checked signals off the maf and i think i had .3 vlt yeah it wasnt doing anything i dont even know how it was runnin. But who knows u will figure it out, by the way kyle is a good man he will help ya throug this mess

MAF sensor output is a frequency (Hz) output so reading it with a voltmeter isn't going to give you an accurate indication of what it is doing. Besides, the MAF reads the air coming into the motor. If you had a problem with the MAP sensor (plugged or just reading wrong), it would tend to cause more severe problems the higher the altitude.

I have a blazer with the same exact symptoms you just explained doing the same type of driving and living in the same type of area. Did you ever find out what was wrong? I'm having trouble figuring out the problem as well.
