i noticed the same trend with mine when replacing one bearing.
Be it i drove around and between the stereo and exhaust couldnt hear it going until it was completly fubar. Couldnt hear the bearing over the exhaust but when i took it to my mech to get it aligned he said, uhh,, ya, i cant align the wheels because your wheel bearing is so shot.... which brings it to a point. If your bearing is that fubar the front wheels will not be in line with each other and causes some extra wear on the tires and resistance, which is what my problem was.
Also possible that the worn bearing is causing greater resistance as well.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I was getting 20mpg and ever since my bearing started making noise my fuel mileage had been dropping, I had a tank only get 14 mpg, call me crazy or lucky, but a majority of the time the blazer got 19-20mpg until recently...
