Its always looked like it just came out of the jug, that orangish color. Id say I just had bad luck, but its a common problem with those trucks, oh well.

Im a GM technician, I work on all gm's and specialize in northstar engines. I've seen the problems and sludge that dexcool can cause in other vehicles. I've never had a problem in my own vehicles, but I do maintain my vehicles more than my customers do.

i have worked in the parts dept for gm dealerships for around the last 24 years, when dexcool first came out it was insane how much it cost.

and for years we had a majority of our service customers change back to the green when it was time for there first major service "60k"
I assume you mean ethelyene glycol when you say green. There are different chemical makeups for antifreeze and they are not necessarily identifiable by color.

I don't? Oh ok. Well thanks for clearing that up. I feel a lot better now knowing that that I don't maintain my own vehicles.

Someone who changes coolant every year is going way beyond what 99.9% of people do. I don't know how that could be considered not doing regular maintenence?? A water pump & radiator leak at 150,000 is not uncommon for any type of coolant.

Default Air in the coolant system

How do you determine if an air pocket exists and if one does, how do you remove the air pocket?

if you hear a bubbly noise come from somewhere or your temp gauge goes up and down as you drive then you have an air pocket. to remove the pocket park the truck up a steep hill have leave the rad cap off while it runs to bleed the air out. or you can get a special tool to get the air out....

An air pocket can cause the engine to run hot or overheat. You can usually get rid of an air pocket by having the heater control on hot with fan on. Then find the heater or other coolant hose that is at the highest point on the engine. Remove it or take it off far enough to let the air out and fill the radiator until coolant comes out the hose and where it was connected to. You may have to plug the hose or the outlet or hold your thumb over it until coolant comes out the other opening. (Do this with a cold engine.) Then quickly connect the hose. ( You can do this where the heater hose connects to the front of the intake manifold on a Blazer.) Run the engine with the radiator cap off and add coolant as necessary.

As bigdaddy said having the front of the vehicle as high as possible helps.
