Default Wierd transmission

This is going to sound really weird about the 4L60-E. When I got home from school today, I accidentally overshot D and 3 when I got back into the car after getting the mail and was about to go up our steep driveway. I accidentally shifted into 2 and I gave it gas and got very little response. It moved forward SLOW at higher RPM, which I thought it was in 2nd gear (isn't it supposed to go 1-2 in 2????). I put it into 1 and it went up the hill as usual. I tried again in 3 and D and it did it okay and seemed like it was in 1. It seems that if it is in 2, it is starting in 2 because it is not shifting and it feels like it IS in 2 when I got it in 2. Did I break my 2nd gear??? The tranny fluid is red and looks okay, but there is a little residue. The car seems to drive okay, although since there is so much traffic, i couldn't accelerate at a steady enough rate to count the shifts. Also, there are no codes in the computer. We had to get a new solenoid on the tranny one year ago because it was shifting rough(repair bill says "K6353 Solenoid, pressure control replace"). It still shifted rough for another 6 months until I found a loose connector on the PCM, reseated it and had no problems since. They replaced 6 quarts of the ATF at the same time with DEXRON VI. The car has never given me this type of problem before. PLEASE tell me i didn't blow my tranny!!!! Please see the photo of the fluid. I don't know what it could be. It seems to be starting in 2nd with it in 2, but 1 works in 1, 3, D.

Fixed the problem with it starting in 2? Was your tranny damaged in any way when they pulled the pan?

If changing the filter helped, you are living on borrowed time. The only thing that plugs up a filter is transmission parts...

I have nothing to base this on as far as the s-series vehicles go, but I know that there are some vehicles that when put into '2' will lock in to that gear to allow for a 2nd gear start. This can be useful in slippery conditions where too much torque multiplication would result in wheel spin.

The car seems to drive okay, though. If I have a flat, straight road, I can count 3 shifts(1-2 and 2-3 at around 2500-3000 rpm to 1500 rpm if I really put the pedal down, and 3-4 is barely noticable, with only up to a 500 rpm reduction) before 45-55 mph (all four gears in OD) depending on throttle. No check engine light or codes on the computer. The only time it really goes crazy is when I push ACCEL on the cruise control to accelerate if I am going like 60 mph and it takes it 700 rpm away from the redline, so I only accelerate using the pedal with the cruise on. I hope that Aamco can check it out when they drop the pan. I asked them to drop the pan, change the filter, put it back together and do a complete flush. If the transmission is seriously close to failure that is surprising news to me because I don't even race or abuse it. I have only towed a trailer once, and it was so light I could move it with my hands unassisted and I used gear 3 and only did 30 MPH on rural roads! Unlike alot of people who do burnouts and drive reckless on school grounds where I go to school, I don't even approach over 3500 rpm unless I am merging onto an interstate and I got to do it "NOW". My friends say I drive like an "old lady" and that my car should last another 100k at least the way I drive and maintain it. The tranny only has 717** miles! How could it be close to failing? The fluid has been pink-red since the tranny pressure control repair at 58000 and they replaced 6 quarts of ATF.

What is so surprising is we have had alot of problems with this truck (shift fork, TCCM, ball joints, radiator, IMG, wiper motors, power window motor), but I still call it a reliable truck because none of them were serious enough to require a tow truck or leave me at the side of the road. Never had to rip out the AAA card or the emergency equipment, unless I was assisting a friend with a jump start or putting out flares to protect an accident vehicle stuck in a ditch full of snow in front of my house .

Sounds like you have answered your own question. There may not be anything wrong.

My comment about a filter/fluid change helping the transmission was directed to chevyracen.
