1998 Blazer 4x4

My wipers are now permanently stuck in the up-most position.

I've had issues with the wipers not working at all. Then if I wiggle the wiper arms back and forth they work again.

Well, the wiggle ain't working any more. I cannot even budge the arms at all.

Anyone know which fuse is for the wipers? I haven't looked in the panel yet.... too dark outside when teh problem hit tonight.

Any helpful suggestions?

 

Replace the wiper motor.

I don't think it is a fuse. I had the same intermitent problem on my 98 4dr. You can try taping on the motor with a hammer or your fist to get it to work to get the wipers down. You can check the wiring connection at the motor but I don't think its wiring either.

You can disconnect the wiper control arms from the motor to get them to come down till you can replace the motor. However, the same amount of work has to be done to replace the motor.

 

check out synergyoffroad they have the replacement circuit board.. not sure if it will help but if I am not mistaken its pretty reasonable.

 

You likely have two bad solder points on the wiper control circuit board. Very common problem, most of us thought all had been fixed by now.

I beleive there is a DIY thread on the repair here. The board needs to be pulled, and you will see the bad solder points, solder them up and end of problem. Or buy a new board...

Is the circuit board a separate item when replacing the motor?

 

Yes the circuit board is seperate. No need to pull or repalce the motor, if the problem you are having is cold solder joints.

 

So, I took a wooden hammer handle and tapped on the wiper motor. Wipers immediately started working again. Just in time because my windshield REALLY needed a good cleaning with all the pollen getting stuck to it.

Later today I used the wipers again. This time they would not STOP. Kept going for about 15 swipes before parking themselves with **** turned OFF.

Would this be linked to that crazy multifunction switch? I am just asking for my knowledge because I need a new one and out seems to control so much stuff

I finally got around to re-soldering the cold joints on the wiper control board. The usual joints by the large connector all had circular cracks. Also the 2 joints on the center "fork" as well as 2 random joints just below the connector ones.

I heated up the joints with a fine-point pencil-type soldering iron. Melting extra solder into the joints helped to get things flowing well.

Works like a charm now, all functions. Sure beats having to pop the hood in the rain to wiggle the connector or re-position the folded over plastic gallon jug cap!!!
