I have a 2001 blazer lt, this is my 2nd winter with it and I love it.
Last night I was out in a snow storm driving home in 4hi with no problems at all.
I parked in my driveway and had to go back out.
Long story short I put my truck into reverse, hear a noise, and as I'm backing out I notice the light is indicating I am in now in 4lo.
I press the 4hi button and all lights near the buttons go out completely and the service 4wd light is on now.
Is it the switch or something far worse?

On the dash switch: Are there 3 buttons or 4?


Could be a faulty dash switch. Some members have had good luck taking the switch apart and re-flowing the solder joints. Use a low wattage soldering iron, (not a gun) and 60/40, lead/tin rosin core solder. Using a soldering gun, or acid core solder, will destroy the circuit board.

It is a 4 button switch.
After reading through this forum I pulled out the switch and opened it up for visual inspection , everything looked normal. Yesterday I went to a local salvage yard and purchashed a couple switches to try and none of them solved the problem either.
My brother in law says it is probably the motor that engages the 4wd, not sure what he said it was called now but he said it was located on the transfer case and only costs $200.
I was hoping it was the switch. :/

 

With the "Service 4WD" light on, it means there is a code in memory. Have the codes retrieved and post them here. This will require a scanner capable of accessing the BCM & TCCM. The scanners at the auto parts stores can not access them.

It could be a faulty encoder motor on the transfer case, but without a capable scanner, it would just be a guess.
