Yes, the pump will run when dry.
But these pumps use the fuel to keep them cool.

But, I imagine that nobody is going to be bench testing a pump for more than a couple seconds at best.

When we push Delco or Delphi for pumps we are doing it out of kidness so you do not have to drop the tank again sooner than you should.
These things eat aftermarket pumps/parts like I eat candy (quickly)

I understand Rich, and I thank you for your reply.

My "confidence" doesn't come from a brand name. It comes from testing. As even someone can get a defective Delco or Delphi pump.

With that said -

Synopsis:

The reason we initially had Zero Fuel Pressure with a running pump was due to a erroneous gas gauge and a faulty biomechanism in the driver seat. (ie: The tank was run dry. It was out of gas)

The pump needed to be replaced regardless. Due to a bad sender unit and intermittent operation.

The reason we did not understand why the pump(s) wouldn't run when out of tank is because we didn't notice Splice Pack 423 and G402 Ground. (at the time)

When removing the filler neck ground, it is hard to see that another ground is on the same bolt, which is Splice Pack 423.

This helped us out.
