how to: aftermarket mech temp gauge..
ok, i am doing this because i couldnt find anything and so i hope this fills the gap.
if it has been covered then by all means.....
this one is pretty easy actually.
to cover the gauge being installed in the cab see this thread...

this is strictly engine side, assuming you have the lines out of the cab and are looking for a place to tap the engine.
**********this is being done on a 99***********
tools:
3/4" extension
adjustable wrench
box end wrenches...sizes depend on you brass fittings.
materials:
(1) mechanical temp gauge kit.
on the front of the lower intake there is a plug that can be removed.
it sits between the thermostat housing and the EGR valve.
i used a 3/4" extension in reverse application with an adjustable wrench at what would normally be the socket end. take your time with this...it will most likely be in there real good.
( i like making up tools )
and here is the plug removed...might want to keep for later...up to you.
now with my mech gauge kit i had several adapters that would allow me to tap the lower intake.
i just test fit each one till i found a winner.
from here its easy...dont over tighten the brass parts.
just a little past snug worked for me.
there final connection.
now run your truck and test for leaks..there pretty simple.
depending on how much antifreeze you spill you may want to run it with pass side slightly higher and cap off the rad.
thats your call.
hope this helps
