For my 97 S10 the bolts holding the ignition switch are a E5-female Torx.
The top grey cover that goes over the ignition tumbler had to be finessed over the ignition switch to get it off. It encompasses the tumbler unlike the newer vehicles that splits in two right at the tumbler.

Thank you for the write up!

Working on this right now, took a couple tries to set the gear to have the key work properly. Once i did i thought shes gona go, but no.
Battery is ace
I tested starter rela,y A O.K.
Has a brand new starter, that once in, started the truck 15 times.
Thought it was good left me dead at the gas station. Jumped it and continued.
Now i figured for sure it was this ignition switch. stil nothing. Im stuck what do i do.

And thanks to all the great posts by here, I wouldnt try nearly any of this without this place.

There are three wires tapped into near the plug end this wouldn't have any thing to do with it?

This is what the switch should look like

So yes those "3 wires" do have a purpose if im recalling correctly. If you have already replaced the switch with a brand new one then id go over the whole thing again to make sure everything stayed in place. If you have have not replaced the switch with a new one then this is certainly a problem. The reason why I ask is because the one in your pics looks like the factory switch.

yes that is the factory switch, it is out now with the new one in, i didn't want to cut into this new one because i didn't read about any one else having having to do this. I can still jump the starter and she runs but sfa all at the key.

NO WAY, must be my lucky day. I checked over everything this A.M. turns out i had blown a fuse last night while trying to set the gear in the switch that goes into the tumbler. it started 3 times in a row perfect. i m not splicing into the new ignition switch like the way the original was anyways. My problem seems to be fixed again by replacing the ignition switch, awesome. gonna put it back together now. Thanks again blazer fans.

Hoping Wolfpack or anyone else can still help with this thread.

I decided to try replacing my ignition switch to correct an intermittent loss of power to the transmission control circuit on my 2002 blazer LS 4x4. I've been following Woklfpack's instructions and referring to a 1998 blazer manual for additional details but I'm having trouble removing the lower half of the split steering column cover.

The two T25 screws are removed but the bottom half won't come loose. Tried tilting down and sliding back as described in the 98 SM but still no joy! I don't want to break any of the plastic tabs. Can anyone help with this?

BT
