Bought a remote start off of Amazon for my kid for Christmas. Plan on working on it soon. I picked up an Encore E5 with 2-way confirmation.

What are some good resources for this? Or do I just start hacking into it and figure it out as I go? Does anyone have a copy of an wiring schematic to work from?

 

As a former professional automotive electronics installer, if you don't have experience with soldering and testing circuits, I'd caution against tackling a remote starter without any experience. It isn't particularly hard, but there are a few ways you can mess up a car doing it. I've seen everything from hacked harnesses causing random problems, to fried ECM, to vehicle fires.

All that being said, if you do decide to take on the install on your own, there are tons of videos on the YouTube showing how to do it, and you can get wiring schematics on the12volt.com. I'd strongly suggest you solder and tape/heatshrink wrap all connections. Stay away from the wire-tap style clips. Those cause way more problems than they they're worth for the little bit of effort saved over soldering your connections.

 

Well, I'm an Electronics Systems Specialist with a power limited license, and I work on circuits plenty, haha, so wiring and figuring out circuits is not a big deal. I installed one on a '98 Venture back in the day, but that was quite a while ago. I did do some you tube searching, but didn't see a vid for a Blazer similar to mine. That site is great though, that will help me a ton and save me a lot of time. Thank you.

And yes to proper soldering and use of heat shrink. With my students, I know if they know how to solder if they can tell me what a "cold solder joint" is and why it is bad.

 

I hope you post pics and an in-depth description. I've been seriously thinking about doing this to my rig.
