Default Insturment cluster

I have a 2000 chevy blazer with a stock insturment cluster that has no tach built in, if I were to buy a factory insturment cluster that has a tach and install it would the tach work?

I am pretty sure that on the 98+, the mileage is stored in the PCM and communicated to the cluster. You should not have this problem.
