RE: Lets talk head units...
I have an Eclipse deck in my other car and I'm not head over heels in love with it. It's a great deck functionally but not very aesthetically pleasing. I have not seen their new line of decks though so the jury is still out.
I have looked in to a couple of decks and would like to know what you guys think:
Kenwood Excelon KDC-X990
Kenwood XXV-01D
Pioneer DEH-P7800MP
Alpine CDA-9857
I'll have to take a look at some of the new Eclispe decks but the ones listed above are what I'm looking at. They arranged from out of my price range at the top to just under my price range at the bottom.

Eclipse always was the best until....Circuit City you say? Jesus. I hope they keep the good stuff outta there. I had a general rule of thumb that any brand you could buy at a huge outlet store was crap. What am I gonna do now? And don't say Denon cause their mechanical parts in the decks are crap.

Well I differ opinions on RF, Alpine and Pioneer with you then. I had a Denon cd player that from day one made a horrible noise when loading and unloading CDs. The place I bought it got Denon to replace it (which was a PITA) and the next one did it too. Assuming this is just how they were I lived with it until out of warranty and then the CD just got stuck inside. Next is a 5 disc carousel home CD player....what do you know makes funny noises too. The damn door on it even comes out sideways and seems to grind on one side. I had it and used it maybe a year before going overseas and it has been in a closet ever since. And finally chance #3 for Denon. Before my Army days me and a friend of mine had a little DJ side business. We used a fairly cheap American DJ dual CD player for years and then "upgraded" to a Denon dual player. Can you imagine my shagrin when at a wedding I opened one of the doors and it fell off? No sir, Denon has had their chance and if you look at their numbers they are not all that impressive. Usually low Signal to noise ratios, dynamic range, and high THD. What exactly am I paying for here?
If you want a story on RF and Alpine I have a few as well. Pioneer is the only one of them that has not done me wrong and I like their products for the money. But when it comes to high end...and unless you are talking TVs....Pioneer just doesn't cut it.
It is not hard to see that once a company ramps up production to sell in a big store, something has to give. RF went downhill fast as did MTX when they went to Best Buy. And look at high end home theater...can't be bought in any big store. Do you see a trend here? Eclipse has been around a long time. Something must have changed in their business practices that would allow them to sell out. I am sure this is not the first chance they have had.
If you still don't believe me...just look at the Snapper lawn mower CEO story of recent history. This man refused to make millions of extra dollars by putting his product in Wal Mart stores because he wanted to keep the Snapper line regarded as a quality product and realized that it is not possible to do this and be sold in a huge outlet. You either get quality or quantity. Not both.

alpine has declined in quality in the last 3 years or so but that had nuthin to do with best buy. however, the type R is the hot **** sub that every1 has nowadays. i personally dont like it, but every1 else thinks its amazing for the price. rf is still a great company. their power series amps are all over the comp scene. they are undeniably incredible amplifiers. and pioneer isnt good car audio? wow, thats a bold statement. to start, i have always run pioneer decks. from low to top of the line models. i cant tell u hhow many ive owned. and not 1 has ever had a single problem. not to mention, the higher end ones have great SQ. now im not saying that pioneer decks are hi end, they arent. but most people dont run hi end decks cause they dont have $2k to drop on 1. but they are definatly excellent for the price range. you cant tell me that the 9600 8600 and 80 suck. they are amazing decks. and what about the DEQ-p9? that processor is very highly regarded in the car audio industry. there have been a few national competors that won with pioneers SPL series subs.
its true that alot of the great car audio cant be bought in those chains or even any stores in some cases. for example: RE, USAmps, JL, Orion, eD, Diamond, Seas, Rainbow, Cadence, PPI, etc etc etc. but that in no way means that the companies in the chains like BB and CC are crap. ,arketing does have an affect on sales of course. look at audiobahn? they pretty da
