Ported Enclosure help/ideas please
#11
Yeah thats kinda what i figured, so i have been looking at a few new subs but still dont know what to get.
I have this amp which is the JBL GTO 601.1 ii and it over powers the Kenwood that i have if im not careful so its a pretty nice amp for what i need.
I would like to get a sub that would work in either the sealed box that i have or the ported box that i have. I think i would rather use the ported tho, i just like the sound of a ported enclosure better. But you said my box was 2.58CuFt and tuned to about 38Hz so i have no idea what sub would work decent in that enclosure. I know its tuned a little high but hopefully it wont be too bad.
Hopefully you have some recommendations? Thanks in advance. Again..

It would be really nice if it was tuned a little lower, but it's not horrible either. You mentioned looking at the DCON before, and it is a fantastic sub. A single 4 ohm coil version would be very well at home on your amp. However, if you wanted to run at 2 ohms it would be a bit too much power for the DCON and I would recommend another sub or two if you wanted full potential from the amp. Don't get me wrong, the performance would likely still blow away what you experienced with the Kenwood, but if you're itching to use all the amp has to offer I have other recommendations.
First off is the SSA GCON, it's the new slightly bigger brother to the DCON. It's rated 750wrms and is perfectly at home in both sealed and ported enclosures which is handy for you since you have both, since it gives the flexibility to play with it. The 580wrms rating of that amp at 2 ohms would be a great match to a D4 GCON. The Sundown Audio SA-12 would be another sub that should work quite well in that enclosure. Both the SA-12 and the DCON will work in sealed enclosures, but really come alive in ported.
Other USA built options would be the Ascendant Audio Chaos series or the Incriminator Audio Flatlynes. Both are well built, well supported and widely used subs that perform pretty much exactly as their price dictates. A more mainstream brand option might be the Alpine Type R, JL Audio W3v3, or the Polk Audio SR12. All should work very well with your amp and enclosures.
Your budget will decide which you end up going with I think, especially since they're all over the map on their prices. Personally, I wouldn't hesitate with either of the SSA subs. My sister's DCON is still the best overall performing and sounding sub at it's price and power point that I've heard. I can only imagine the GCON being that much sweeter with a little more power handling and a little more XMAX. None of the others are any slouches either tho. I NEVER recommend anything I wouldn't be willing to purchase myself and I think that whichever you decide on will suit your needs and make you happy for years to come.
