RDS/ Stands for radio data system. When your on fm it usually displays the artist/ song info on the screen. Has nothing to do with sound or anything. Just receives a digital signal with information.

Cant help you on the harness as mine is a 98 but I didnt need a special harness.

i have a 01 and i didn't need the 100 dollar harness... the way u can tell if u need that harness is if the door chime comes out the door speakers or outta the dsah somewhere...

They switched in something like 02 or 03 to have the chime come from the speakers. The harness has a little chime box that gets mounted in the dash. I didnt think there was a special harness for RDS or non-RDS though.
GMs in general from 02 or 03 up are a pain to do radios. Anything with On-Star needs a special (read: expensive) harness to make an aftermarket HU work, and even some models without on-star have the entire security system run through the stock HU, requiring a seperate specialty harness!
At least the factory Bose systems are easily integrated. Some imports with the premium sound systems need all speakers replaced or all new speaker wire ran when a new HU gets installed [:@]
