Default Question about Stock HU

I was just wondering if features when you replace the factory Head Unit? When my uncle was going to get one with 01 Impala his mechanic told him he would loose some of the features such as the factory remote keyless entry. I know its a different HU from the 01 MY and the 99 MY for GM Viechles but I just wanted to make sure before I go ahead and replace it with my Kenwood from my old car.

And is it just me or do the factory rear door speakers suck big time. The only time I can hear them is when I turn the fade to the rear and they sound like **** when I do.

its the data retention features of your radio and car. some things are built in, such as door chimes through the radio. GMRC-01 or a few others are the harnesses to correct this.

newer radios have whats known as RDS ( radio data sentry ). the only real biggy if you have a rds radio and you replace it with out the right harness you will loose your door chime like mentioned. your owners manual will mention it if you have rds. usually you can tell if you turn your vehicle on acc and open the door. if your door chime comes from your speaker its a very good chance you have rds, if it comes from under the dash you're good to go. rds didnt really kick in till about 2001 and newer. your 99 should be fine.

What does the RDS do besides the door chime? Anything important.

not all newer chevy's operate other systems through the head unit. Don't worry about this on the blazer or an s-10. It is not a problem. These things are not run through the stereo on most of them if not all of them. Now impalas, cavaliers, silverados, and some others are a different story.

I figured out today that I dont have it. The beeping sound is coming from under the dash. Kind of funny Ive never heard that sound until now, im just so used to pulling the key a little bit. so this weekend I will put my CD player in, I cant wait to have access to my 2500+ songs on my Ipod. Im so sick of CDs.
