1996 GMC Jimmy 350 swap

I started this a couple months ago, old 4.3 started mixing coolant into the oil and went unnoticed for some time. We bought it back from family member and decided to make it a project. Picked up a 70 model 350 small block and a 700r4. Freshened up the engine and am putting it back together. Got headman s10 v8 swap headers, plan on running 4.3 radiator with a pusher electric fan.

Looks pretty good, maybe in a few years I can do a v8 swap in my jimmy.

El_Beautor 06-05-2013 09:40 AM

Sweet! Can't wait to see a video of it running!.

Tajohns34 06-05-2013 10:00 AM

I can't wait to see how this turns out.

AndrewO1991 06-05-2013 11:24 AM

oh, there is going to be a burnout vid when it gets running. We have some old dry-rotted spare wheels lying around ;) may as well get use out of them. All I have to do is to drill a few holes for the trans mount and then I'll get to bolting everything back up. Which I found odd becasue I was lead to belive a 700r4 would just bolt right in, but i'm an inch off

chris015 06-05-2013 11:44 AM

How far forward are you with the engine? That could be the issue. What fans will you be running?

abig84 06-05-2013 06:10 PM

cool, i did basically the same thing years ago, i ran the engine as far back as i could and the radiator in place where the condenser was so i could run a manual fan, all the reading i did on it so many people were complaining of over heating due to electric fans

AndrewO1991 06-05-2013 07:47 PM

well, i have the engine as far back as it can go. I'm gonna mess with it as I was under there earlier and saw another set of holes near where my trans crossmember is. It seems if i scoot the engine up I may be able to make it work with those holes. I dont have a particular electric fan in mind yet, any suggestions are welcome. I would rather go electric fans, but certainly dont want it to overheat.

chris015 06-05-2013 10:18 PM

You can get a nice set of flex a lites for 150+ or get a fan set off a 3.8l taurus. Problem with the taurus it pulls a ish tons of amps on start up,other then that its a great set. You need at least 4k cfm with ac. So,keep that in mind.

Tajohns34 06-05-2013 10:19 PM

I got a set of fans from a 2000ish intrepid and they work great.

AndrewO1991 06-06-2013 08:45 AM

i wont be running AC, it didn't work before anyway. I'm gonna check some scrap yards for a taurus fan and intrepids as well. whichever i find first is probably what i'll use

AndrewO1991 08-20-2013 06:08 PM

Did some more work

mounted the radiator by modifying the fan shroud
Attachment 31603
Mounted and wired my electric fans, found some on ebay that seem to fit my needs, 2 12inch fans. Tested them and they push pretty good.
Attachment 31604

Moved my relay mounting and used an existing relay to run my fans with a switch inside i used to use for fog lights

looks like i'm gonna learn how to make brake lines, the factory brake lines on the driver side all coiled up is touching the headers... Guess i'll just delete the abs module while i'm at it

AndrewO1991 09-05-2013 05:55 PM

Diaita 09-05-2013 06:30 PM

Beauty, makes me wanna get mine swapped! You should pull the ABS module out as well, it won't work anyway with the ECU removed. It helps brake pedal feel immensely!

AndrewO1991 09-05-2013 09:01 PM

i was thinking about it but then i'd have to get creative with the brake lines. Lol. I'm still trying to figure out the power steering hose

chris015 09-06-2013 07:08 AM

hold up brah. ive done this 3 times. all swaps over. find you a 84-85 s10 truck 86+ doesnt have the right valve. engine size doesnt matter.

you will need :
the 2 small master cylinder lines
valve (must be the brass one,if its aluminum it wont "bolt in" with the lines)
the lines from the valve down the the coupling in the center of the front cross member. it'll be on the back side of it
the line from the valve to the driver side hose.
the line from the rear of the valve to the coupling on top of the frame. its right behind the edge of the inner wheel well. right side. its a pita to get too but its doable.

This ALL bolts right in. at least on the 1st gens. I wanna say it should on the 2nd gen as long as you have the coupling on the center member, and the coupling against the top of the frame on driver side at the corner of the wheel well.

Diaita 09-09-2013 03:36 AM

All true Chris, on most Blazers/Jimmys. BUT, his is a '96, it runs a different ABS system, and it has a separate combination valve. It's a matter of simply re-routing the lines, bypassing the ABS module and using the stock combination valve.

chris015 09-09-2013 08:25 AM

but you should still beable to rip all that out,and do away with all of it. As long as the 3 connecting points for the lines are the same on the frame it'll swap over.

the t in the center of the x member, and coupling on the driverside frame.

AndrewO1991 09-09-2013 03:43 PM

Here we go, coolant is holding a good temp with my 2 pusher fans (around 180-185). However i do need a new water pump as this one is leaking :-( but it's not a big deal. Also the throttle is rigged up and can only give it half throttle till i fix it permanently.

chris015 09-09-2013 05:44 PM

^^ LOL yeeeeehawww!

You may have mentioned it in the thread but what fans are you using?

AndrewO1991 09-09-2013 07:31 PM

2 12inch push/puller fans i bought off ebay. I have them set up as pushers, it is important to note that I had to flip the blades over, if i didnt it wouldn't pull near as much air. All with a factory 4.3 radiator (using the trans cooler as well). With the factory 350 truck motor water pump. I need to go write down the part numbers on those rad hoses for future reference

chris015 09-09-2013 07:42 PM

is it one of those 50.00 combos etc? I had looked at em at one time. didnt know if theyd work. Do you have ac?

AndrewO1991 09-10-2013 09:27 AM

they were about $55 total, they seem to work good. No I dont have ac. I'm also trying to find out why my blower fan (for the inside) doesn't work anymore. I can hear the blend door still function but the fan wont kick on. That wasn't ran through the computer was it?

chris015 09-11-2013 02:16 PM

while i was out today at the yard(gio when u read this, its not the yard that has the stuff you need lol) I took a look at the brake lines and how they run on a 01 s10. it had the coupling on the frame, and on the crossmember the same as my 91 and 93. so for my brake thing i posted,it still works on a 01. so yours should too.

AndrewO1991 11-23-2013 11:48 AM

Well, after a few donuts and a road test i have established the "rebuilt" 700r4 i bought for the truck has no 3rd and 4th gear. Anybody familiar with the 700r4 knows what that means... maybe a donut vid soon. This is why I cant have anything nice

Diaita 11-23-2013 12:02 PM

Is the TV cable hooked up and adjusted? If it shifts pretty hard at a high RPM into 2nd it's probably your culprit.

AndrewO1991 11-23-2013 05:14 PM

its hooked up right, if anything its loose, it shifts good 1st to 2nd but when its time to shift into 3rd there is nothing there. Just revs till it slows down enough to get back in 2nd
