FYI, your 'cold air intake' won't have cold air unless it has a shield around the filter to keep the warm engine air out. Otherwise it's pulling warm engine heated air. If you image search "Blazer cold air intake" you'll see lots of examples of shields. Some kits come with them included or it's not that hard to make your own with a bit of sheet metal or even ABS plastic.

I do have some spare sheet metal so I can get a shield like this whipped up. Would it be necessary to heat-proof the pipes aswell with wrap around shielding or just the shield for the filter?

I've never seen intake pipes covered, so I'd say that it's not necessary. I expect that the negligible heat effect would be mitigated by the incoming air continually cooling the pipes. The shield is primarily to control the source of the air, forcing the intake to draw from cooler air from outside the engine bay.
