can always cut out the metal, and use 3m panel bond adhesive instead of welding. just as strong in most cases.

 

Here is a picture I took after grinding off the rust in a bunch of random areas. There is a lot of sanding and priming still to go.

 

It took alot of thought and research into how to paint or what to do about painting it after fixing the rust. A bunch of threads on here helped me think about whether or not to go to a Maaco or other body shop to have them paint it, verses emulating some of the Youtube videos I've seen of people doing it themselves. At first I thought I would just do most of the prep work myself and have them spray it a shiny tan color, and even primed a bunch of areas with grey primer. But now I think I'm just going to return the remaining grey primer cans and just white prime the whole thing. I may leave it like that or get it painted eventually, I guess I'll have to see how it turns out. The Blazer is mostly white, and the paint on the roof is good so this will be the easiest rout too i think.

 

Well, it's been six months since I've done anything besides practical use of the Blazer, so I finally sanded and painted the spare tire rack. I'm pretty much settled on having a cheap white paint job done professionally, and this was the only thing that I needed to do before I have someone else spray it.





I also went ahead and painted the rusty metal strip along the bottom of the hatch glass and my bonus wheel. It was actually harder than I thought to find one that fit the Blazer and fit the matching hub caps. I ended up getting it off of an old 70's Cadillac at the junk yard.

 

Well, today I am finally painting the Blazer. Not myself though, I actually took it to Maaco to have it professionally sprayed all white.


I thought about it a lot, and read a bunch of conversations on the forum about it as well. That helped me determine to do lots of prep work myself before dropping it off. Hopefully it will pay off in the results.


It should be about a week or so, and I will put up some pictures.

I always liked white first generation blazers, it should look pretty good.

 

I got it back a couple days ago and drove it to a job interview. I was a little early, so I killed some time at Walmart and saw this in the parking lot.


I'll take some better pictures when I fix a few smaller details, but I couldn't resist snapping this one:

Thanks you guys. So now that it has the nice white paint job, other small imperfections are a lot more noticeable.

Like the faded black trim along the sides and back bumper. (That I also got some primer on in some areas)

I decided to spray paint the trim black again, and I ordered some red marine pin striping that fits right along the old yellowed plastic chrome groove in the trim.

I was going to try Back to Black or some other product that you rub onto old black plastic parts, but I've heard that that stuff wears off and you have to keep reapplying it. I'm pretty happy with the job this plastic spray paint did. And the boat pinstripe was easy to stick on and looks pretty awesome.
