"operation Blazeranche"

Ok so Ive been kicking around the idea of cutting the top section over the rear cargo area off for awhile. Well today I got a wild hair up my ass and decided to prep everything for "surgery" tomorrow. I started out by taking the rear liftgate off by pulling the pins and unplugging the wires for the defroster and wiper. Then I started, or attempted to pull the rear quarter glass out. Didnt realize that there was 2 different seals on them. Well, the first one shattered on me and I stripped everything. SO I decided since the first ones broke and I gotta vacuum it, might as well break the second one to hurry up and get it done. So I took a hammer and popped it in the corner and got it all out and had to take a box cutter to strip everything. Finally, I re-ran all the wiring that went over top to the bottom. Heres the pics Ive gotten so far and Ill update again tomorrow once I cut it off.

I've been wanting to do this forever! Ill make sure I check tomorrow to see how it turned out!

warthogdriver 05-30-2012 06:18 AM

you sir are braver then me....been looking at this mod for years.
i just cant bring my self to do it.
my biggest problem is how to seal the rear end back off from the weather.

good luck...i hope it goes well for you.

cochran07 05-30-2012 12:01 PM

I agree.. I dont think I could ever bring myself to do this to my Jimmy.. now maybe if I found a trashed blazer for cheap... Theres the pics of the yellow one on here with the "s10" back side of the cab that looks sick

tripovermyego 05-30-2012 12:40 PM

Ok so heres an update so far. Ive cut the headliner and was about to hop on the grinder when 911 toned out for a 4 wheeler rollover and me being a first responder/fire fighter, I responded. Well, got back in(the guy was fine) and my friend thats helping me with the cuts went to lunch so here within the hour Ill be back out there to make the final cuts. What Im gonna do is on the top, Im gonna come back an inch or 2 on the cut and then fold it over nice and neat to make it look like a factory thing. And my friends gonna weld angle iron on the edges where the windows used to be and where the rear posts are sitting. Heres a pic of the headliner cut and Ill update it more through out the cuts

Sounds like you have a good plan. Are you just leaving the back open or are you going to seal it with a new window somehow or another?

warthogdriver 05-30-2012 01:57 PM

i always thought if i did this i would keep the rear top half and try to make a topper out of it..like the old school big boy blazers.
i saw a forum thread on some taco site where he did it that way...came out nicely.

tripovermyego 05-30-2012 04:29 PM

Ok so I finally got the cuts made. Cuts didnt come out as nice as I was hoping because I was in a hurry because I had yet another call. But its off. Still gotta cap everything so its still ugly but its looking good. And to answer your question cochran07, Im gonna have a custom soft top made. Itll snap down and itll line the outline of the back so everyone can tell its a custom made vehicle. Heres some more pics of it topless. Oh and its ALOT stiffer in the back with all that weight off! My t-bars are cranked up all the way and now it looks like its been lowered! lmao

Man thats cool and it looks like a fun project.

warthogdriver 05-30-2012 05:05 PM

looks good so far.
my other thought was to chop the lift gate and tack it in place so it looks like a tailgate.
the older second gens with the split rear gate would be perfect for this.
you going to bedliner the cargo area now?

i have to say...i envy you.

would look awesome with that tire carrier on rear now....just a thought.

my other concern would be roll over...always thought a roll bar just below roof level would look good and help the structure.

The funny part is right before I read this, I was thinking about doing the liftgate cut like you said! lmao. I even thought about the spare tire carrier a little bit ago too! Itll be so much easier now that its open right there in the corner. I called today on a drop down tailgate for these blazers and they want $125 for theirs without the hinges and strike plates. So I think for now I wont have anything there cause I do want the tailgate that drops down. And eventually Ill have a roll cage type thing put in for extra support but it held my fatass where I cut and Im 300 pounds lol

99Legendary 05-30-2012 06:09 PM

I saw a soft top thing someone else had to throw over the back.

Rip out that carpet and get that thing rhino lined.

jbw23 05-30-2012 08:08 PM

Looks good, I wanna do it now!

May One 05-30-2012 09:46 PM

My friends dad got one that was wrecked from getting rear ended and he did the same thing, but he welded a wall in right behind the back seats. The left tail light was a little crooked from the damage but it looked pretty cool. I wouldnt mind doing it but the reason I dont have a pick up is cuz I have cargo in my truck all the time so I wouldnt want it getting swiped or wet or blown away. Looks good tho, good job dude.

tripovermyego 05-31-2012 02:35 AM

So...I was talking to a local cop and we got to talking about the Blazer being cut. He told me that I may have drive to Jefferson City to get it inspected by the big boys because of a major change to the body. I hope not! Its gonna really piss me off if I did all of that work just have it fail!!! Ill call my local DMV tomorrow to see.

Oh ya the old Jeff City drive. I remember making that drive once from Kansas City. Them people cost me a lot of money for nothing once. I had a suspended license and they said it was time to get it back. So I called and asked them to do a nation wide check for me to be sure I could get it back. I was sure I still had other things to take care of at the time. They said all I had to do was come take the test's, pay a fine, and I am good to go.

So I took the day of overtime off from work and drove all the way up to Jeff City. Paid the fines off and went to take the test's Got all done and was ready to get my picture taken. Sorry sir we show a hold in CA. I had to leave with no DL. Thanks to MO I had a $500 day for nothing. Im glad I moved out of that retarded place. AR is much better. They dont care about stupid stuff and I have my DL along with a totally clean driving record. It only took me nine years with no DL to figure it out.

$25 later I have a DL. They didn't even make me take a test. We also have no inspections. Just take the title in and get tags. Oh and no sales tax if its under $2500. I love AR.

El_Beautor 05-31-2012 09:37 AM

You sir, are a brave man. I just about wet myself just drilling holes to put on my tire carrier. I don't think I could bring myself to attempt something like this right now. Maybe once I get my student loans paid off and money isn't such an issue.

I gotta say though, that you'll have a pretty unique Blazer when you're done.

jbw23 05-31-2012 09:51 AM

where do you live at to have to drive to jeff city? i live in kansas city!

chevyracingfan23 05-31-2012 09:59 AM

Look good so far. I know I can't do it to my Blazer. I am too afraid to put holes in my Blazer. Hope that the inspection won't fail because then it will be a waste of work. Them inspection people always try to find something unsafe to stop you.

tripovermyego 05-31-2012 12:32 PM

Ok, so within the mess of yet ANOTHER medical call, I managed to call the DMV and they said that since its already reg as a truck in the state of missouri, I dont have to have it inspected. YAY me!

cochran07 05-31-2012 02:14 PM

Looks good, cant wait to see the final product.

Looking hot so far... the more I see pictures, the more I want to cut my truck like this... but don't think I could do it unless I got help.

I did mine all by myself. The only help I had was someone holding the hatch up while I took the pins out so it didnt fall down on me. Oh and removing the cut top. But everything else was on my own. Now, Im just waiting on a guy to cap everything off.

tripovermyego 05-31-2012 03:36 PM

Heres what it looks like with the seats folded down. Ive gotta find a place to tuck my jump bag you see sitting there. Id hate to lose it while going down the highway. That bag cost me over $200!

http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/...o/100_1181.jpg

warthogdriver 05-31-2012 03:56 PM

still looking good.

yeah cargo would be an issue for me too.
i always carry a tool box, jack and some gear.
one thing i thought of with the spare gone from underneath was a lock box built into the cargo floor...with that tire gone you can gain some decent space.

You know, I never thought about that! I had a 03 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the spare tire was mounted under the floor. Like you lifted the floor bottom to get it out. When I got my roof rack mounted up top, I mounted the spare tire up there and used the empty space for storing things.

CraigSnedeker 05-31-2012 04:17 PM

Lookin' good!

Cargo would be an issue for me to, I have a spare tire, crate, and a number of other things. Of course, I want a tire carrier on the rear so that wouldn't be an issue. You could always get a cargo net

I'd need help with the wiring, removing the carpet on the roof, and a number of other things. I'm such a noob, lol

tripovermyego 05-31-2012 05:19 PM

All I did was unscrew the rear coat hangers and then took a box cutter across the headliner and it came right off. All you have to do with the wiring is take it off the clips and let it drop down and tuck it under the carpet. Took me 5 mins for all of that

CraigSnedeker 05-31-2012 05:47 PM

Oh.. alright. Sounds easier then I thought

tripovermyego 06-01-2012 11:44 AM

Still looking for someone to do the soft top but I think I may have found a couple of companies! I also decided that I will do some sort of a roll bar back there since the roof is really soft

While you are waiting you should rhino line the floors

warthogdriver 06-01-2012 01:47 PM

+1 rhino line for the win!!
If you wrap this up for a decent cost and the bugs are worked out....i may make the jump....may.

tripovermyego 06-01-2012 03:24 PM

haha. Ive been thinking about rhino lining the floor!! I just may end up getting the supplies myself and making my own cover since its pretty much my own creation! Plus it probably would be cheaper anyway to do it myself.

CraigSnedeker 06-01-2012 03:54 PM

lol he's gonna be the light for so many of us, I dont think anyone would have dared before he did it

tripovermyego 06-01-2012 03:56 PM

richphotos 06-01-2012 05:09 PM

This is interesting, Not something that I would do, but it looks good, I will admit

tripovermyego 06-02-2012 01:06 AM
