Did you check the oil level? Did any check engine lights come on? Where was the noise coming from and for how long was it there? What was the oil pressure on the gage? How has the truck been running? Sorry about all the questions but it helps with diagnosis.

If the 'tapping' noise happened while you had the key turned to start, it may have just been the starter trying to engage? Did the engine start or not?

The above poster was heading towards an internal engine 'knocking' which would indicate a bad oiling system, if the engine was actually running. This would be BAD.

I'm hoping that your description of the sound, happened as you were trying to start. And that the lights flickering happened at the same time. That would indicate a probable bad battery, not enough voltage to start the engine. Cause could be the battery istelf, or even the alternator, which charges the battery.

A little more description of the problem would definitely help diagnosing. I hope you can get it figured out!
