Available Motors For 1988 K5 Silverado
Old School newbie here.
I had a 1988 Silverado K5 a while back, and now am looking for another.
Nothing beats lumberingdown the roadina big boy Blazer!
What were the available motors for the 1988 K5 Silverado?
Thank you very much in advance!
David.

305 & 350. They also put a diesel in them, but dont remember what size it was.

I believe the diesel was the 6.2L detroit.

Thanks irocknrol2 and swartlkk (this handle is interesting!).
Can another larger-sized engine be substituted for the 305 or 350?

You should be able to put a big block in there, but the fuel delivery could be the fun part if you don't use the vortec 454. Even at that, you may need to upgrade the fuel pump and mostlikely would have to upgrade the front bars to compensate for the added weight.

No, the Vortec 454 is the one that was available in the 2500+ trucks in the mid to late 90's. But that one would work as well. You would need to get a TBI manifold for it and so long as the fuel pump could support larger injectors for the engine, I don't think that anything PCM-wise would need to be updated (but it wouldn't hurt). With the motor in that link, you could convert the truck over to carb and just go with it.
But with that said, you could go with a 350 bored and stroked to 383 and have almost as much power, lighter weight and mostlikely quicker revving. Heck, take a look at the specs in my sig. Not bad for a small block with just an overbore.
*EDIT* - The reference to the Vortec 454 was incorrect, you would need one of the older TBI 454s from the late 80's to early 90's pickups to have it drop in. And you would probably have to upgrade your front springs when going to a big block. I got a little mixed up when I saw '94 in irocknrol2's sig.
