If there is anything wrong with the old one (regulator, poppet leaking, etc) I would not spend any money repairing the old one. That said, the upgrade spider can be pretty pricey. You will notice no difference in performance if your old spider is working properly. If you decide to go with a new MPFI spider, we typically recommend the AC Delco one. If the fuel pump check valve is not the cause of your pressure decay (as shown by testing with fuel pump sticky), you might want to consider just throwing on a new spider since the cause would then have to lie somewhere in that assembly.

I will test the fuel pump per the sticky and replace the fuel filter as it has been a while. Probably have to take off the intake and check for leaks so nothing gets overlooked. Saw a youtube video on it not so daunting now.

As far as replacing the spider, can't I remove the intake and reconnect just the fuel lines amd turn the key to accessory. Wouldn't that show a leak anywhere in the spider asnd regulator assembly?

Not if the cause for the observed pressure drop is the regulator being stuck open a bit. Would be difficult to do, and would only show leaks external to the spider - but there is no reason that you can't do it if you really want to. Don't think key on accessory will energize the fuel pump though.

p.s I'm out of town for my son's wedding this weekend - leaving tomorrow morning.
