1985 2.8 liter S10 Blazer, 4WD, Auto trans. The rear main seal is leaking, confirmed by local shop. Mechanic says the engine might have to come out to replace the seal, something about the S10's. I didn't understand the whole explanation about why it was easier to pull the engine instead of just pulling the drive line, transfer case, tranny etc.
Does anyone have any experience with this job? And does the engine need to be pulled to complete this job?

i would think esepecially if it was a 2wd it would be just way easier to remove the transmission. unless theres some goofy procedure to doing the seal. once the trans is out of the way you just have a seat on the floor and repair the seal

 

if I remember right it's a two peice seal witch requires droping the oil pan

 

Got if figured out. Confirmed by the VIN # that this engine had the one piece seal, apparently everything 1985 and newer has a one piece seal.
The process for getting to it according the Haynes, is to essentially unbolt and move the front drive train forward and drop the engine aprox 4" making the seal accessible. That's the only way to get the oil pan off to do the job.
Either way it's labor intensive and expensive. Getting a quote from a local shop for the job, looks like somewhere around $500-700.

which is why my rear main has been leaking for the past few years, only a drip over night, im waiting for the trans to go out or some other reason no way am i going to do this job unless i have to

 

I think i would rather pull the entire engine my self. Thats really the only way to be certain the new seal seats and wont leak afterward. Almost everytime Ive seen one done in the vehicle they leak a short time later.
